The Collins Branch Reopens!
On Monday, February 22nd, we will re-open the doors to the
fully accessible, renovated and restored Collins Branch Library.
One of the many enhancements you'll notice includes the entrance
itself. The new entry is at the back of the building and can
be reached via stairs or a ramp making access possible for those
in wheelchairs and easier for those pushing strollers. The ramp
encloses what will become a delightful reading garden this spring
when the Department of Public Works will be planting native
trees, shrubs, ground cover and grass to create a retreat that
we are sure will be popular for reading, relaxing and library
programs.
Once inside, you'll glimpse the spacious new bathroom conveniently
located on the first floor and equipped with green fixtures
and a changing table! As you enter the main building through
an original door, you'll see how much the new interior layout
allows the historic charm of the building to shine. New shelving
maximizes the natural light that streams in through the large,
antique windows. Comfortable chairs and tables create an inviting
space to relax and work. The staff is excited by all the new
display possibilities to tempt you with new titles to check
out! The Children's Room has specialized shelving designed for
picture books, and teens have a private space to call their
own. We think you'll love the new Collins Branch Library!
We have many to thank for bringing this dream to fruition.
The project would not have been possible without the financial
support of the Cambridge Commission for Persons with Disabilities,
the Cambridge Historical Commission, and of course, the City
of Cambridge. We wish to thank Robert W. Healy, City Manager;
Richard C. Rossi, Deputy City Manager; Louie DePasquale, Treasurer,
the City Electrical Department and the members of the City Council,
past and present.
We were extraordinarily fortunate to have both architects and
a general contractor who saw the possibilities of the Collins
Branch and appreciated the neighborhood's investment in their
library. We want to thank Austin Architects of Cambridge for
their vision and commitment, and Dagle Electrical Construction
Corporation , for their professionalism and expertise. And finally,
we want to thank the staff of the Collins Branch for their hard
work, flexibility and absolute commitment to maximizing your
pleasure in this busy neighborhood library!
Please join us on the 22nd, to rediscover the branch, meet
old friends, and find fabulous new things to take home and enjoy!
Hours: Monday 10-6; Tuesday 10-6; Thursday 1-8; Friday 10-6
The branch's regular program schedule will resume in March.
